[Hope looks stunned.

He's just witnessed his little Surskit who was working so hard at training turn into this weird moth thing. He blinks with a smile on his face before turning the camera to the Masquerain flying around his head.]

I don't really know what happened. One minute we were training and then suddenly he went all white and changed into this thing.

[The Masquerain starts flapping, seemingly annoyed at being called a 'thing'. Hope blinks at him before laughing. That was definitely his Surskit.]

Lightning! Ven! See?

[He grins showing it again.]

A lot of them do that. It's called evolution.

I thought evolution took millions of years.

[Masquerain is now perched in his hair.]

So... will this happen to Absol and Hoppip?

Oh, was that your first evolution? Congratulations.

[He smiles. Oh, a congratulations! This must be a good thing then.]

Thanks I guess. It was kind of unexpected.

The first time always is, especially when the difference between the two forms is so great. Can the Pokédex tell you if it'll evolve again?

Not around here. They evolve when they reach a certain level.

[Juuust watching you, Masquerain. Better not try and pick Hope by the hair, you hear?]

It'll happen to Hoppip, but I've never heard of an Absol evolving. I'm not sure if they do.

Oh. I didn't think to check that.

[A pokédex entry is listened to before he replies.]

No... Sursk- ... Masquerain is the final evolution.

Huh. I see.

[Oh~ Masquerain wouldn't try that. ... While you're watching anyway.]

That's weird. So... do they get stronger?

[She's watching you, bug. Don't think she isn't.]

Yeah. They change forms like this and they get stronger. Some of them do it more than once, too.

A two-stage family, then. That's the case for most Pokémon. Others evolve twice, and a few have multiple parallel evolutions.

Really?

[He blinks.]

Like... you can never be sure which one you get?

Huh.

[He pats his Masquerain's head gently.]

I didn't know that. But I did wonder because some of them look similar.

[Lightning nods at that, remembering a certain something, before she smiles faintly again.]

You'll get used to it with time. It'll be normal to you eventually.

Some can be decided by using certain stones or trading them, but that's not always the case. Eevee has seven evolutions, and two of them depend on its happiness at particular times of the day.

Like anything huh?

[He looks up at Masquerain.]

I was thinking of going to the store to grab a soda. Wanna come with?

Oh. I see. That's kind of interesting. And a little strange.

[Hope shakes his head.]

This stuff gets confusing.

[She nods again, ready to follow him, but then she stops dead in her tracks as if remembering something.]

Before we head back, do you want to meet the Pokémon I told you about? The one who looked like Alexander?

Oh! Sure!!

[Hope grins excitedly.]

[With one of her old had gestures, one that she knows he'll recognize as a cue to step back, Lightning herself steps away from Hope and pulls out a single Pokéball from her belt, the contents of which are released to cry out at the sky, a singular and very loud "Blaaaasss!" breaking the peace of the day...and making Lightning rub her ears. She was closer to him than she should have been.]

Hope, meet Alexander. I told you he was loud.

[.... It's a giant. Turtle.

MAYBE IT'S FRIENDLY.]

[He grins and laughs.]

If Alexander was a pokémon he'd probably look a lot like this!

[Super excited Hope now. He's tentatively, yet somehow excitedly coming closer.]

[Oh, the giant turtle is indeed friendly. Friendly and staring at Hope like he's a long lost friend who hasn't been seen in years. Careful you don't get hugged, Hope. Those stubby arms are strong.]

It wouldn't surprise me. He earned that name for a reason.

[Hope smiled up at the giant turtle. Then suddenly-

CRUSHING HUG.]

N-Nice to see you too--

[Okay breathing might be an issue now.]

[Breathing might indeed be an issue, but Lightning's reaction time isn't. She only has to take one step forward, really.]

Alexander.

[One word, but said in such a tone that Alexander flinches and...gently sets Hope down, back on his feet. Uh...whoops?]

[Hope coughs a little bit, bent over with his hands on his knees before lifting one hand to give Lightning a thumbs up. He's okay. He's okay.]

Nice... [Cough] To meet you.
